Festivals
Festivals are everywhere these days! The most famous in the UK is Glastonbury. In addition to contemporary music, festivals these days host dance, comedy, theatre, circus, cabaret, and other arts. Leading pop and rock artists can headlined, alongside thousands of others appearing on smaller stages and performance areas.
- Glastonbury Festival is a five-day festival of contemporary performing arts that takes place near Pilton in Somerset. The festival hosts contemporary music, dance, comedy, theatre, circus, cabaret, and other arts. Leading pop and rock artists have headlined, alongside thousands of others appearing on smaller stages and performance areas. Films and albums recorded at Glastonbury have been released, and the festival receives extensive television and newspaper coverage. Glastonbury is the largest greenfield festival in the world, and is now attended by around 175,000 people, requiring extensive infrastructure in terms of security, transport, water, and electricity supply. The majority of staff are volunteers, helping the festival to raise millions of pounds for charity organisations.
There are many other festivals in the UK, including:
- V Festival – often referred to simply as V Fest or VF is an annual music festival held during the third weekend in August. The event is held at two parks simultaneously which share the same bill; artists perform at one location on Saturday and then swap on Sunday. The sites are located at Hylands Park in Chelmsford and Weston Park in South Staffordshire. The “V” represents the Virgin Group as the event is sponsored by Virgin Media.
- Reading and Leeds Festivals are a pair of annual rock music festivals that take place in Reading and Leeds in England. The events take place simultaneously on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the August bank holiday weekend, sharing the same bill. The Reading Festival is held at Little Johns FArm on Richfield Avenue in central Reading. The Leeds event is held in Bramham Park near Wetherby the grounds of a historic house. Campsites are available at both sites and weekend tickets include camping. Day tickets are also sold.
- Family Festivals – The whole family can enjoy camping at a festival. Here’s our pick of the best child–friendly events with plenty for parents too. See what the family festival season has to offer.
- Camp Bestival – Camp Bestival is a British music festival, the “little sister” of Bestival, both organised by BBC Radio 1 DJ Rob Da Bank. It is held annually, in July, at Lulworth Castle in Dorset and is targeted at families with small children.
There are many other festivals held all over the UK and in Europe these days.
